He’s back, the 10th Doctor is back!

I am notorious for being behind the times, and haven’t really had a chance to read up on all the amazing Doctor Who awesomeness that has been coming out surrounding the 50th anniversary, so I have been out of control excited the last day or two upon seeing photos of David Tennant, aka THE TENTH DOCTOR, donning his signature brown suit for the filming of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special.  Also back, is his lovely companion, Rose Tyler (Billie Piper).   Could a Whovian’s day get any better??  Only if Matt Smith regenerated back into David Tennant…  I WISH!!  I am enjoying the Matt Smith Doctor, and I just LOVE Riversong, but for me, Doctor Who just hasn’t been the same without David at the helm.  I felt even the chemistry Between River and The 10th Doctor was better as well.  As I am learning to like Matt Smith and moving on, I fear that I will be set back after I see DT come back!

Now, I am just wondering which Doctor and Rose will it be.  Will it be parallel universe Doctor and Rose or our universe Doctor and Rose??  And will he be wearing his 3-D glasses?  Enquiring minds want to know!  I guess, for now, we all just have to anxiously abide our time until this amazing episode comes out.

Doctor Who - 50th Anniversary Special

Any way that we can do a switch and keep David on as the Doctor after the special is over??

Happy Easter, people!

Happy Easter everyone!! In case you were wondering why I dislike the Easter Bunny, I think the photo below is evidence enough…

You will be missed, Uncle Vernon

I woke up this morning with a text from a Potterhead friend saying that Uncle Vernon died.   So great he was in the Harry Potter movies bringing the vile character of Vernon Dursley to life.   I was also  fortunate enough to see Richard Griffiths when he and Daniel Radcliff came to town for Eqqus on Broadway.  It was an amazing play, and I remember saying, Daniel did a good job, but he just can’t compete with Uncle Vernon, he was amazing!   It’s a shame they cut the Dursley’s as much as they did in the later films, it would have been nice to see this great actor more.

Vernon-Dursley-Richard-Griffiths

Richard Griffiths, aka Vernon Dursley, we loved to hate you, you wonderful actor. You helped make the magic of Harry Potter come to life.  You will be extremely missed.

MegaCon 2013

booth

Happily stuck at my booth.

This past weekend, I was all fun-in-the-sun in Orlando, Florida for MegaCon.  Ok, being that I was working all weekend, it was more fun and no sun while in Florida.  The weather was beautiful the entire time I was there, so I did get to enjoy it a little bit in my walk to and from the convention center everyday…

Unfortunately for me, I was stuck at my booth the entire time, pimping out my wares, so I didn’t get to go to any panels or meet any of the fabulous celebrities that were in attendance, such as the ever amazing Weasley twins themselves, James and Oliver Phelps.  Now, that is twice in a row I missed them!  I was sick when they were in NYC a month ago at the Harry Potter Exhibition.  I had friends that went and told me that they were absolutely lovely.  How could they not be??

As sad, yet fun, it is to be stuck at a booth, I got to see a whole lot of characters walk by my booth, and even better when they come on in to say hello.  Here are some photos of the creative geekery that passed me by:

Aren’t you so pretty, Katniss…

Is there anything more fabulous than the “Capital Portraits” photos for the upcoming 2nd installment of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire?  Ok, maybe I am being superficial, but just these Portraits alone are getting me extremely excited for this movie!   I would have to say the most fabulousness of them all has to be Miss Effie Trinket.   Those Capital folk sure do know how to turn heads, and none like Miss Trinket!  Also revealed were Cinna, Haymitch and Caesar Flickerman, and more, played by Lenny Kravitz, Woody Harrelson, and Stanley Tucci respectively.  And to top it all off is the Mockingjay herself, Katniss Everdeen, played by the newly minted Oscar winner, Jennifer Lawrence.  I might be making enemies here, but as much as I loved The Hunger Games movie, I wasn’t crazy about Jennifer Lawrence in it.  But I still really like her and am looking forward to seeing her reprise this role.  I think the problem for me was, I felt no connection or chemistry between her character and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson).  I LOVE Peeta and just didn’t feel his love for Katniss.  But this is a new movie with new fabulous outfits, and I await it all with anticipation!!  Now, If only we could  somehow get that sexy Seneca Crane back…

Mean Girls, the Musical?? THAT IS SO FETCH!

Ok, best thing in the world today??  Mean Girls, the Musical, of course!!  This movie has been a favorite of mine for so many years, and I have no shame in admitting, I still quote lines from the movie, much more often than I should and at my age, but I just can’t help myself!  To hear that it is going to be a musical is music to my ears!  I have no doubt that with Tina Fey on this project, it will be just as amazing as the movie.

You go Tina Fey, 4 for you, Tina Fey!!

Oh, how I miss hot Lindsay Lohan.

Oh, how I miss hot Lindsay Lohan.

I finally watch Game of Thrones

WARNING:  slightly spoilery

Ok, I admit, I was VERY hesitant to watch Game of Thrones.  Anyone who knows me knows that I am bit of a Harry Potter fan, ok I am a HUGE Potterhead and a Whovian to boot!  So it seems that Game of Thrones would be right up my alley, right?  WRONG!  Or so I thought…

a-game-of-thrones

This book cover does not instill excitement amongst readers…

It all started years ago when my good friend, Randy, gave me his old copy of A Game of Thones. He told me it was his Harry Potter – a book series that he just can’t get enough of.  He also told me that he was annoyed that the author hadn’t come out with his next book yet because he was helping develop an HBO series based on the books.  So he gave me the book, which I promised I would read, yet, it sat on my nightstand for months without me picking it up.  I don’t know why, I just had no desire to read it.  Ok, that is a lie, I know exactly why I didn’t want to read it, the book cover was crap!  Yes yes, I judge my books on their covers, as stated in my previous post…  Ok, now, maybe I was judging too harshly, the cover is from the 80′s.  Oh wait, it’s not?  It’s from the mid 90′s?  EPIC FAIL!!  Ok, now I am really being too harsh, the mid 90′s aren’t too far off from the 80′s (I am stretching it here).   I am sorry, but I would look at the dated and cheesy book cover (shown above) and had absolutely NO DESIRE to pick it up!  But yet, months later, I finally opened it, because I did promise Randy.  I admit, it took me a bit to get into it, but I held on because sometimes the best books take me a while to get going and I was hoping it would be the case with this book.  Well, I was starting to come around when BOOM, The Queen and her Brother-Lover toss my FAVORITE character, Bran, off the ledge!  My reaction: I calmly put the book down and never open it up again.  I tell Randy, the next time I see him, how upset I was when Bran died.  How could they do that to me?  And he just agrees with me…

Years later go by, and the book series is now a massive hit on HBO.  I see EVERYONE reading the now new and updated cool book covers of the Game of Thrones series up and down the subway.  (Updated for a good reason).  And yet, I still have no desire to pick it back up.  My heart just broke when Bran fell and died.  My friend, Staci, who is a huge fan of the book series and TV show, she tells me I should read it, and I tell her about how heart broken and upset I was when Bran died, and her reaction — “But he doesn’t die!”.  My reaction (about Randy not telling me that Bran doesn’t die) “That dick!  Why didn’t he tell me?  I would have kept reading!”.  Randy’s reaction when I yell at him for not telling me that Bran lives - “Hey, if you can’t handle that, you can’t handle the series”.  Staci’s reaction to Randy’s reaction — “Yeah, I guess he is right…”.  So, I never picked it back up again or watched it either.

I have an etsy shop where I sell geeky and fandom inspired shirts and such, and Game of Thrones is the only fandom I sold that I had not watched.  I just had a couple friends tell me that I HAD to have some Game of Thrones shirts.  So I would have to sheepishly admit, at conventions, that I had not actually watched the show or read the book when people would come by and talk to me about it.  I was such a poser!  But not anymore, I have finally taken the plunge and am watching the series!   My first reaction — “well, that is just disgusting” (referring to the intro White Walkers copping people up).  I admit, I cannot handle blood, guts and gore, and Game of Thrones is not lacking in that department.  I am constantly having to look away and ask my dog to let me know when it’s safe to look (which he is terrible at!).  After the jousting scene, the one where the crazy guy looses and chops his horses head off, took me unexpectedly, I decided that the show needs a warning system for people like me.  You know when you are at a 3-D movie where it is only 3-D for certain scenes, such as in Harry Potter?  They flash the little glasses on the bottom left and right corners to let you know when to put them on and off?  Well, I think that Game of Thrones needs something similar to warn me when to look away, especially in cases of horse head chopping off scenes.  I decided it should be two bloody swords crossing -at both the bottom corners of the screen.  How can we get this done for me?  Anyone??  Now, what to do about scenes where Papa Lannister is skinning an animal throughout the entire scene…

game_thrones

My Game of Thrones shirts.

Why yes, I do judge my books by their covers…

Neverwhere

One of my favorite books

Alright, I have no shame in admitting this, but I judge my books by their covers.  Don’t you judge me!  It’s just that I love to walk around in book store, and really, what else is going to catch your eye if not a beautiful or interesting book cover??   It is because of this judgement that I have read and discovered authors such as Neil Gaiman for the first time.  I was in a book store years ago with a friend and his book Neverwhere caught my eye.  I showed it to my friend telling him how much I loved the cover, I believe my exact words were something like “I want to read this because of this cover” – not the first or last time I have said that, and he just said, “oh, that’s Neil Gaiman, it should be good, he’s a famous author, you haven’t heard of him?”.   No I hadn’t.  So I read the book and LOVED IT!  No regrets there!

I guess I am just a sucker for visuals and graphics.   Take for instance, Lemony Snicket’s Who Could That Be at This Hour?  Oh my goodness, I was recently at Barnes and Noble picking up a Percy Jackson book for my nephew when this book caught my eye.  I rushed over to get a better look.  The colors, the graphics – I loved it!   Of course, I bought it.  I just couldn’t resist!  I still haven’t read it yet, but will hopefully soon.  I have no doubt it will not disappoint being that it comes from the same author as A Series of Unfortunate Events.

the-great-gatsby

How could I resist a beautiful cover such as this??

Just this past week, I was in London, and my Scottish friend, Elaine (but you don’t sound Scottish!) and I stopped by a Waterstones (we just can’t resist a bookstore), and you could constantly be hearing us say something like , “Oh oh, I want to read this book again, but with this cover…” or “look at this beautiful book…”.  It was hard, but we managed to walk out of there without buying the whole bookstore — really, it was mainly because it wouldn’t all fit in our suitcases…  But I didn’t manage to escape completely unscathed, I did walk out with The Great Gatsby.  CONFESSION:  I have actually not read The Great Gatsby or any other F. Scott Fitzgerald book or really any classic books in general.  I know, you are judging me and rightfully so!  For someone who loves to read, gets lost in the worlds created by an authors amazing gift of words, I have just not been able to do it.  I tried years ago to read Pride and Prejudice, but couldn’t get through the first couple of pages.  So the reason I walked out with The Great Gatsby was because I was taken with the beautiful “vintage” edition of the book.  Both Elaine and I were fangirlling the cover big time!  So now, just because of the cover, I am extremely excited to read this book now, but I guess I have to wait until I finished re-reading Percy Jackson’s The Battle of the Labyrinth…

Yes yes, I know, this is all very superficial of me, but it is the way it is.  There are so many books and so little time.  It is the cover that attracts not only me, but so many.  In this world of words that I love so very much, it is an image that draws one from the aisles and into the world of the book.

Seriously, how adorable??

Goodbye, my dear Tenth Doctor.

(warning: slightly spoilery)

images-6

Oh, how this breaks my heart.

My adventure in Doctor Who started a few years ago when I began watching the series with Chris Eccleston, aka, The Ninth Doctor.  From the very first episode, Rose, I was hooked.  I loved The Doctor, I loved Rose, I loved Mickey, and I even had a soft spot for Jackie Tyler.   Not knowing anything about the show, prior to watching it, I was a bit shocked at the end of the first season when Eccleston’s Doctor “dies” and regenerates into David Tennant.  I was completely disgruntled about it!  How could they do this to me??  Wellllll (channeling #10…), all I had to do was watch 1 episode (maybe 1 and a half being David was asleep for much of his first episode) to know that I was a Tenth Doctor girl through and through!  I sped through the episodes.  I just couldn’t get enough!  Now, I don’t cry much in shows and movies (no tears from me at the end of The Titanic), but when Rose got trapped in the parallel universe at the end of season 2, I couldn’t stop the tears from rolling down my face.  The anguish they felt, I felt too.

I liked Martha.  It did take me an episode or two little to warm up to her, but when I did, I loved her!  She was smart, inquisitive and brave, and like me, fell in love with The Doctor.  I was sad to see her go as well, but proud of her that she made it on her own terms.

Now Donna, oh Donna…  There is no one like Catherine Tate.  I actually got to see both David Tennant and Catherine Tate on the West End in 2011 in Much Ado About Nothing (AMAZING).  Well, that sassy red-head had me laughing and loving her from her very first episode.  She was the perfect match for The Doctor, and even better, because she didn’t fancy him!   I don’t think I cried as much at Donna’s finale as I did with Rose’s, but I was more devastated for her.   To see all of the universe, all of space and time, and then to save the entire world, what a beautiful and wonderful thing, but to have the memory of it taken away, in order to save her life, was incredibly upsetting to me.  She had the whole world in the palm of her hands and poof, it was gone from her memories.

Donna-Noble-Banner-doctor-who-2024595-677-216

In the meantime, in 2011, I went to the Doctor Who Experience in London with a friend.  I was still in the middle of season 3 or 4 when I saw it.  It was “lead” by Matt Smith’s Doctor, and for part of it, they showed the regeneration scene on a loop.  I knew David’s Doctor was going to end at some point and Matt Smith had already taken over, but I wasn’t there yet.  To see this regeneration scene was such a shock for me.  Without even seeing the episode, the emotional regeneration broke my heart.  Not to shortly after I returned home and continued watching the show in Netflix instant streaming, I go from Season 4 to Season 5, and when I started Season 5, I was in quite the shock to see Matt Smith prancing about.  I emailed a friend to see what was going on (Hi Chris!), and that is when I found out about the “movies”.  I held off for months, maybe even up to a year before I watched them, and when I did, I watched them one at a time, and right before The End of Time, I decided to start from Chris Eccleston and start all over.

See, to me, as long as I did not watch that final episode, David Tennant was still The Doctor!  Yes yes, I know, I am extremely silly, but it’s true!   Well, I did it.  I finally watched it.  I watch part 1 about a month ago, and tonight, I decided to take the leap and watch part 2 of The End of Time.   I loved it, it was everything the end of David Tennant’s run should be.   I felt the ending scene’s where he visits all his companions was a little much, yet, fitting.  I got most choked up when he visited Verity Newman, the great granddaughter of Joan Redfern, the woman he fell in love with in Human Nature and The Family of Blood“Was she happy, in the end?” — I couldn’t help but get misty-eyed when he said that.  But my favorite moment came when the Sigma Ood showed up when the Doctor fell, trying to reach his TARDIS, “We will sing to you, Doctor.  The universe will sing you to your sleep”.  Oh, how I love the Ood!  Ever since The Doctor Donna, I have had a soft spot for the Ood!

sidebar: When Chris Ecclseton regenerated into David Tennant, it was simple, but when David regenerated into Matt Smith’s Doctor, he nearly blew up the TARDIS.  I guess there was so much awesomeness in David that when he regenerated, it exploded out.  Yep, he really was that awesome…

So goodbye, my dear Tenth Doctor.  Like the Sigma Ood so wisely says, This song is ending, but the story never ends.
